UPVC doors are great and keep the weather out but repeated use and if you aren’t too careful, repeated slamming of UPVC doors can cause a number of problems with the door, handles and locking mechanism.
To be fair, there’s a lot of UPVC door locks around these days and UPVC doors and windows have been a great boon for keeping our houses warm and dry, but the number of callouts we get for problem UPVC door locks seems like it’s on the increase weekly.
All those double-glazing deals we went for in the last 10-20 years mean there’s a lot of aging UPVC about and the doors, while having served us well are nearing the end of their useful life. UPVC door lock parts work loose, go out of alignment and locking mechanisms don’t work properly anymore.
Suffice to say, a good number of our locksmith callouts these days are for UPVC door lock failures.
In a standard UPVC door the handle, locks and locking mechanism are fitted into the whole length of the door with lever systems to slide bolts into place when the door is locked - there’s a lot to go wrong and the whole door needs to retain its rigid structure so everything lines up, as well as the usual problems that can occur with the barrel, pins or mechanism of the lock itself. In many cases the UPVC door handle is connected to the lock such that moving the handle up can engage the lock for example.
There’s a lot that can and does go wrong with UPVC door locks and there’s a lot of aging and sometimes mis-treated UPVC doors out there so failing or broken UPVC door locks are one of our top locksmith callouts each week.
